Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

We are delighted to welcome our children and families as they begin this exciting new stage of their primary school journey. Year 1 is a wonderful year full of curiosity, creativity and new opportunities, where we aim to nurture every child's love of learning while helping them grow in confidence and independence.

We understand that moving from EYFS into Year 1 is an important transition. Our priority is to ensure this change is as smooth and positive as possible by building upon the familiar routines, learning experiences and play-based approach that children have enjoyed in Reception. While children will begin to access the Year 1 curriculum, there will still be plenty of opportunities throughout the timetable for child-initiated learning, exploration and discovery.

During Year 1, children will be introduced to a range of exciting new subjects including Computing, History, Geography, Art, Design and Technology, Religious Education and Science. These subjects will encourage children to ask questions, investigate the world around them and develop a broad range of knowledge and skills through engaging, hands-on learning experiences.

We will also continue to place a strong emphasis on developing children's oracy skills. Through discussions, storytelling, partner work and collaborative activities, children will be encouraged to express their ideas clearly, listen respectfully to others and become confident communicators.

As children become more independent learners, they will also begin to receive homework. This will be designed to be enjoyable and meaningful, encouraging children to share their learning with parents and carers and develop positive learning habits at home.
