Fencing Fit
We had a lovely afternoon today with our FitFencing workshop! It was a fantastic introduction to the sport which gave the children the chance to learn and practise the basic movements in a fun and engaging way. We were taught how to stand in the correct fencing stance, move forwards and backwards with control, and use simple attack and defence actions. The session was active and well-structured, with clear demonstrations that helped the children feel confident and excited to try each skill. By the end of the workshop, the class showed great progress and enthusiasm, making it an enjoyable and memorable experience for everyone! Here are some of the things that we learnt:
1. On Guard Position
The starting stance in fencing — feet apart, knees slightly bent, hands ready. It helps with balance and quick movement.
2. Advance
A small step forward while keeping the same stance.
3. Retreat
A small step backwards, still staying in the fencing stance.
4. Lunge
A quick extension of the front leg to reach forward and “attack” while keeping balance.
5. Parry
A simple blocking movement used to stop an opponent’s attack by moving the sword slightly to the side.
6. Thrust
A basic forward extension of the arm to touch the target with the tip of the sword.
