🦖 Year 1 Become Fossil Hunters! 🦕
Year 1 have had a very exciting start to our History learning this term!
We received a very special letter from John Grant, a palaeontologist, who told us all about his work studying ancient life, including dinosaurs, prehistoric plants, insects and other creatures from millions of years ago.
John had heard a very exciting rumour… there could be hidden fossils around East Farleigh Primary School! He sent us a map showing different areas where fossils might be found and asked us to carefully investigate.
Armed with our maps and our fossil brushes, we headed outside on a fossil hunt! Dinosaur Detectives at the ready! 🗺️🔎
The children carefully explored the school grounds, using the map to mark an X wherever they discovered something interesting or important. We made some fantastic discoveries, including dinosaur teeth, skeletons, ammonites and dinosaur footprints! The children recorded some of the things they found and thought carefully about what these objects might tell us about life in the past.
There was plenty of excitement as the children became palaeontologists for the afternoon. They were fascinated by the idea that fossils can be millions of years old and can give us clues about creatures and environments from long ago.
📚 Bringing History to Life
Our fossil hunt has helped us begin to develop some of the key skills from the Year 1 History curriculum. The children are learning to understand the past, identify similarities and differences between life today and life long ago, and use objects and other sources as evidence to find out about the past.
Most importantly, the children had a fantastic time being curious, asking questions and discovering history for themselves. Who knows what we might uncover next…? 🦕🦴🔎
